Pulkit Taneja Shares His UGC NET-JRF Journey
THE BEGINNING
From Psychology to Yoga
Pulkit Taneja’s academic journey did not begin with Yoga. Before entering the field of Yoga, he completed his
Bachelor’s and Master’s studies in Psychology.
His journey into Yoga began in 2022, when, following the guidance of his Guru, he started studying Yoga. He subsequently enrolled at Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar for an M.A. in Human Consciousness and Yogic Sciences.
During this period, he came to know about the UGC NET-JRF examination through his seniors. Seeing the excitement around their JRF success inspired him to understand the examination and begin his own preparation.
A new academic direction in 2022 eventually became a journey towards one of the highest achievements in UGC NET-JRF Yoga.
7 Attempts. One Goal. JRF.
Pulkit qualified NET in his first attempt, but the journey towards JRF continued. It was his seventh attempt that finally
brought him the JRF — and ultimately an extraordinary All India Rank 2.
HIS JOURNEY
Seven Attempts, Continuous Learning
2022 — Entry into Yoga
After studying Psychology, Pulkit began his formal journey in Human Consciousness and Yogic Sciences.
First UGC NET Attempt
He appeared for the examination for the first time and successfully qualified NET.
Continued Preparation
Instead of giving up when JRF remained out of reach, he continued analysing every attempt and improving his preparation.
Student + Teacher
His association with Vivekananda Yoga Academy gave him the opportunity to teach while continuing his own preparation.
Deep Study & Analysis
Note-making, PYQ analysis, mock tests, mind maps, flash cards and revision became an integral part of his preparation.
Persistence Through Setbacks
Every unsuccessful attempt was treated as a learning opportunity rather than a reason to quit.
UGC NET-JRF Yoga — AIR-2
The seventh attempt culminated in JRF qualification and an outstanding All India Rank 2.
TIME MANAGEMENT
Student, Teacher & Working Professional
One of the most remarkable aspects of Pulkit Taneja’s journey was managing multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
Alongside his own preparation, he was working professionally and also teaching Paper 1 at Vivekananda Yoga Academy. Rather than waiting for a perfect schedule, he created a disciplined routine around his responsibilities.
Morning Classes
Focused Study
Teaching
Revision
Rest
He described a routine in which, after completing his morning responsibilities, he would go to a nearby government library and study for several focused hours before returning to his teaching responsibilities.
Discipline was not about finding extra hours. It was about giving a fixed purpose to the hours that were available.
AN IMPORTANT TURNING POINT
How Teaching Strengthened His Own Preparation
One of the most valuable opportunities Pulkit received from Vivekananda Yoga Academy was the opportunity to teach. Teaching forced him to understand concepts at a much deeper level. When a teacher has to explain a concept to another student, simply remembering information is no longer enough.
The teacher must understand the concept, anticipate doubts, connect related topics and explain the subject clearly. For Pulkit, this responsibility became an important part of his own learning process.
“When you work on a subject by teaching it rather than only studying it, the learning becomes much deeper.”
GUIDANCE & TEACHING
The Role of Vivekananda Yoga Academy
Pulkit highlighted the contribution of the academy’s faculty and the way the online classroom environment remained interactive and engaging.
👨🏫 Manan Sir
In-depth teaching of Patanjali Yoga Sutras, connecting concepts across the four Padas and helping students understand the subject beyond examination preparation.
📚 Anuja Mam
Particularly helpful for Hatha Yoga texts, cross-referencing different texts and improving recall of important concepts.
🧠 Anatomy & Conceptual Learning
Anatomy was highlighted as an important area for Yoga students, particularly because questions can be framed in challenging ways in competitive examinations.
👥 Entire Academy Team
The interactive classes, regular questioning, revision, homework and student engagement helped maintain consistency even in an online learning environment.
STUDY STRATEGY
The Art of Effective Note-Making
Pulkit’s approach to note-making evolved during his preparation. He realised that copying an entire book into a notebook does not automatically create effective revision material. Instead, he created two broad levels of notes.
Detailed Notes
Created primarily for understanding concepts and developing depth.
Short Notes
Created for rapid revision and quick recall before the examination.
Exam Pointers
Important terms, Sanskrit words, references, sequences and key facts.
His short notes focused on the information that needed to be recalled quickly during examination revision.
Notes should not only be made for learning. They should also be designed for fast recall.
MEMORY TECHNIQUES
How Pulkit Remembered Shlokas & Difficult Concepts
Acronyms
Initial letters of multiple terms were converted into easy-to-recall memory patterns.
Mind Maps
Related Yoga concepts were visually connected to improve understanding and recall.
Flash Cards
Yoga Sutras and their reference numbers were organized into flash cards for structured revision.
For Yoga Sutras, he also created landmarks within sequences, allowing related groups of Sutras to be recalled together.
The goal was not simply to remember information, but to make recall easier when the examination demanded it.
PYQ & MOCK TEST STRATEGY
Why Previous Year Questions Made a Huge Difference
Pulkit’s PYQ Insight
According to Pulkit, if his entire preparation is considered as 100%, he would attribute approximately 60% of the role
to PYQ practice and analysis.
However, the key was not simply solving previous year questions. The real benefit came from analysing them.
For every question, he tried to identify:
- Which topic did the question come from?
- What exactly was being asked?
- Was it chronology?
- Was it matching?
- Was a Sutra reference being tested?
- Was it a factual or conceptual question?
- What pattern could be identified from previous questions?
He also revisited mock tests and PYQ series multiple times. Even after answering a question correctly, he checked whether the underlying topic was sufficiently covered in his notes.
Solving a PYQ gives you an answer. Analysing a PYQ teaches you how questions are created.
THE COMPLETE PREPARATION SYSTEM
Study → Practice → Analyse → Revise
Online Classes
Subject-focused lectures and interactive learning.
PYQs
Questions were solved and analysed for patterns.
Mock Tests
Regular practice helped build examination readiness.
Doubt Solving
Difficult concepts were clarified through guidance.
Revision
Repeated revision helped strengthen recall.
Strategy
Focus remained on what to study and how to approach
the examination.
PULKIT’S MESSAGE
Do Not Let the Number of Competitors Decide Your Confidence
Pulkit’s message to students preparing for competitive examinations is simple but powerful.
Students should not become discouraged by the number of candidates appearing for an examination or by the number
of students who qualify.
Instead, the focus should remain on the goal:
your own JRF seat.
If the goal is clear, the number of people competing should not decide your effort.
His own journey demonstrates this philosophy. Six unsuccessful attempts did not stop him. Each attempt became an opportunity to identify gaps, learn and improve.
BEYOND THE EXAMINATION
“Yoga को केवल पढ़िए नहीं — उसे जीना शुरू कीजिए”
As a teacher, Pulkit also shared a deeper message with Yoga students.
Yoga is not merely a subject that can be approached by memorising isolated facts. As students read the classical texts and begin understanding Yoga more deeply, the concepts can gradually become part of their way of thinking and living. According to his experience, this deeper engagement makes understanding, remembering and reproducing concepts in the examination more natural.
When Yoga becomes something you live and understand, remembering and reproducing its concepts becomes more natural.
